Minutes of April5, 2009 meeting:
Present: Elaine (facilitator), Jeff, Charlotte, Shelby, Dorothy (minutes-taker), Julene, Anna, Elle
Next meeting April 19, 2009 facilitator is Dorothy Brady, minutes-taker is Jeff.
May meetings: 3rd and 17th
Minutes from previous meeting were read.
CLARIFICATION by Julene that SDC isn’t a done deal and needs to be approved for keeping donation money. Also In response to, they will be issuing checks if approved.
FOLLOW UP: Anna submitted a hard copy of Local Harvest CSA report: “What is a CSA?” You can find it in the SEEES notebook in periodical section of the library. Also, online at www.localharvest , then click CSA
NOTE: Facilitator and minutes-taker will rotate and the next meeting’s facilitator will be decided after the minutes are read.
PROPOSAL: The thank you letter in the local paper was received by the community with gratitude, therefore additional letters to businesses practicing green principles as well as to individuals making outstanding efforts toward a sustainable future in Skagway either through financial donations, or actions. Anna proposed be sent. Anna will write letters to: You Say Tomato, Loom, Klondike Clothes Rush, Jewell Gardens, Dorothy Brady, Jeff Broudeau, Stuart Brown, Courtney Birdsall Clifford, Julene, APT.
PROPOSAL: “Green Awards” Criteria to be brainstormed in sessions during meetings. The Awards could be presented during the flower show. Anna and Elaine will work toward this happening.
AGENDA ITEM: Julene presented the flyer on recycle situation in Skagway for the final editing. Additions were made. It was decided that they will be given out at Spring Stroll, to businesses wanting to display them in their brochure rack, and possibly as stuffed in local newspaper. Dorothy will ask Jeff Brady.
Elaine will look in Juneau for a source to print brochures in soy ink and on recycle paper and get a cost for 300 and 500.
AGENDA ITEM: Charlotte reported on the on-going arrangement to accommodate Stephanie fro Haines to speak in Skagway.
AGENDA ITEM: Shelby reported on plans for Spring Stroll with the theme: “Have a Sustainable Stay in Skagway”. The stall will consist of a visual question: A bottle of Pine-Sol, Clorox, and Vinegar with price of each and dilution for each to do the same task. Efforts are being made to have the Chamber of Commerce, the sponsor of the event, have cloth bags printed with SEEES logo for the event that last year used plastic bags. If not this year we will pursue the idea with them for next year.
AGENDA ITEM: Parks and Rec meeting on Wednesday at 4pm. Dorothy and Shelby are to attend in relation to 7 Pastures site possibly becoming the home for the Community Composting.
AGENDA ITEM: Discussion on sustainability for Skagway City Council and SEEES to be represented at every meeting. Need to follow this up at next meeting.
AGENDA ITEM: Garden Club asked for a site on the Garden Page on the Website, a continually updated one entitled: Garden Corner Bed In this “corner”, news of up-coming Garden Club meeting and activities would be posted and a report of recent events and project completion. Material for posting on the Website was submitted for approval by the group. Discussion was had on emailing Jeff for Website posting at:sustainableskagway@hotmail.com separate from emailing for blog to: sustainableskagway@gmail.com
